A long, varied shoreline
Arun’s coast runs through resort seafronts, residential stretches and more open sections of shore. Bognor Regis and Littlehampton are the most obvious hubs, while Felpham, Middleton and other nearby coastal areas provide their own access points and atmosphere. Much of the shoreline is shingle, and the beach profile can change with tides and weather.
Swimming and sea safety
The sea can look calm while still carrying strong currents. Arun District Council advises swimmers to consider tide and weather conditions, never swim alone and use lifeguarded areas marked by red-and-yellow flags where available. A red flag means the water is unsafe to enter. In an emergency at the coast, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
If you get into difficulty in the water, the RNLI’s widely promoted “Float to Live” principle is to lean back, extend your arms and legs, control your breathing and float until you can call for help or swim to safety.
Dogs, wildlife and seasonal rules
Dogs are welcome on many parts of the coast, but restrictions apply to specified bathing-beach areas in the summer season. Rules can distinguish between the beach itself and adjacent promenades. Check the council’s current beach guidance before visiting with a dog.
The coast is habitat as well as recreation space. Birds feed along the shore, and seals or cetaceans may occasionally be seen. Give wildlife plenty of space, keep dogs controlled and avoid approaching animals resting on the beach.
Practical planning
Check tide times before a long beach walk, particularly if your route uses sections of shore that may narrow at high water. Bring sun protection and drinking water in warm weather, and remember that conditions on the Channel can change quickly. Public facilities and beach patrol arrangements can be seasonal.
